WEEK 007_Presentation Techniques_Design Philosophy

Future Firms treats their client-progress meetings similar to progress pin-ups in studio. They initially put together a presentation book for each meeting, which gives the client a hard copy of each design phase. Furthermore, they pin each page of the presentation book onto the wall by the conference table, which gives the client full visual access to the contents of the meeting. In addition to printed out materials, Future Firms uses 1:1 scale models/prototypes during client presentations to give the client a tangible sense of textures/materials/scale/atmosphere/etc. Future Firm prides itself on keeping current with design technologies (hence “Future”). They are up front with their clients during the first meeting about exploring different technologies and representations during the design process for each project.

Their design philosophy centers around experimentation and congregation. The scale of their projects range from the tangible to the theoretical. They aim to question the status quo of architecture by exploring alternate materials, public space, scale, etc. If they are not learning something new, either through success or error, then they are not upholding the Future Firm name.

WEEK AT A GLANCE:

This past week I stepped away from the built work, and dove back into the Illinois River Project. I have set my focus on the Asian Carp infestation of the Illinois River and how their invasive nature is negatively affecting biodiversity along the river. A couple of research diagrams and test renders have been produced to understand the conditions and agents influencing the basin. Not sure if a conclusive presentation set will be reached by the end of the internship.
